The Roots of Happiness

Dr. I. Satya Sundaram

Aseamy side of modern life is our preoccupation with things that are banal. Man’s quest for happiness continues to be in a limbo. Everyone wants to lead a happy life. But, invariably one experiences unhappiness at one time or the other. We alone are responsible for our travails and troubles. Also, given the vicissitudes of life, we may have to develop a stoic attitude to life. The present-day impoverished society is the denouement of a tenuous link between the individual, the family, the society and the environment. Important institutions like the family have been enfeebled.

Nature of Happiness

A person is happy only when he enjoys mental peace and economic security. Sages say suffering is our own creation. Sadhguru of Isha Foundation has said: “Physical pain can come from outside, but suffering is always self-created because it is just your psychological process.” (The New Indian Express). According to Sadhguru: “Forces of anger and hate have always been well organised on the planet, while forces of love and compassion have always remained disorganised.” (The New Indian Express).
