it. It was recognised long ago that we cannot simply take dharma for granted, i.e. we cannot simply assume that dharma will always prevail and that there would be no danger of its subversion. A duty was cast on those who seek protection from dharma to in turn also take care of this wonderful governing concept of life, if and when it is in jeopardy.
The purpose of dharma is not only to attain a union of the soul with the supreme reality, it also suggests a code of conduct that is intended to secure both worldly joys and supreme happiness. dharma to marry, raise a family and provide for that family in whatever way is necessary. The practice of dharma gives an experience of peace, joy, strength and tranquility within one’s self and makes life disciplined.
The Manusmriti prescribes 10 essential rules for the observance of dharma: patience (dhriti), forgiveness (kshama), piety or selfcontrol (dama), honesty (asteya), sanctity (shauch), control of senses (indraiya-nigrah), reason (dhi), knowledge or learning (vidya), truthfulness (satya) and absence of anger (krodha). Sage Manu further writes, “Non-violence, truth, non-coveting, purity of body and mind, control of senses are the essence of dharma”. Therefore, dharma governs not only the individual but everyone in the society.
To redeem ourselves and our society, we have to return to the path of dharma and follow it as meticulously as possible even if it means living with some inconvenience and hardship to start with. Once we are back on the track of dharma, it will take care of us individually and the society as a whole.
